Finding the correct clothing sizes for young girls is not always easy. This is, of course, because people of all ages come in different shapes — and sizing is not always consistent between manufacturers.

As a guideline, there are five basic categories for kids’ clothes: baby (up to 24 months), toddler (2T to 6T), little kid (4 to 6X) big kid/tween (7 to 16) and extended sizes (18 to 20). United States’ clothing charts show that a girls’ size 10 is in the big kid/tween category.

This size 10 is also considered a medium, and it is generally designed for girls 55 to 57 inches tall, with a 29-inch chest. The waist measurement for this size is 24.5 inches, and the hip measurement is 30.5 inches.

Not sure what size to buy? Usually, size 8 measurements are about 1 to 2 inches smaller, and the next size up, a 12, is from 1 to 2 inches larger. Girls that are anywhere from 7 to 16 years old can fit into sizes 7 (S) to 16 (XL), but there are exceptions.

When shopping for girls’ clothing, you’ll want to consider price. This is because kids are forever growing, but you may need to purchase quality-made clothing that can stand up to all kinds of play.

Choosing 100% cotton makes sense, as it feels great against the skin, but it can shrink and wrinkle in the laundry if you aren’t careful. Fabrics that have some polyester added for stretch can fare better and last longer, and double-stitched hems are also more durable.

Be sure that your child has plenty of basics, like T-shirts, undershirts and jeans or leggings. Children of all ages often want to wear these fundamentals, and you can layer tops for extra warmth when it gets cold out. And of course, tailer her clothing to her likes and dislikes. Whether she’s into unicorns, spaceships, cars, kittens or ballerinas, you’ll have no problem finding her favorite theme on today’s girls’ clothing.

• If you find a garment that fits exceptionally well and that she really loves, buy more in different colors or patterns.
• Always read the manufacturer’s label before washing garments. Some cannot be put in the dryer, and others must be hand-washed. If you don’t have time for hand-washing, buy something else.
• Some product pages have sizing charts, and manufacturers may offer guidelines about how the clothing fits. Some clothes run small, and others run big; it’s good to know this before you buy. Check customer reviews as well.
• White t-shirts and tank tops are great for tie-dye and fabric-painting projects, if you have any on the horizon.
• Some girls’ T-shirts are made to have a slim fit, while others are roomier. You may wish to understand what kind of fit your child prefers before you buy.
